How we use steel corrugated pipe culverts in a project? Here we are going to take one highway project for example to see the used of corrugated pipe culvert. The Dengfeng to Ruzhou section of Jiaotong Expressway is a section of the highway network planning in Henan Province, between Jiaozuo and Tongbai Highway. It is also a major part of the north-south main passage between Jiaozuo and Suizhou Yueyang Expressway in the central region. It is the addition between G55 and G4.
The project has a total length of 55.720km, covering an area of 5830.3 acres with a roadbed width of 26m. It includes a super large bridge with a length of 1206m, 23 large bridges with a length of 5443.56m, 8 medium bridges with a length of 576.00m, 74 culverts, 5 tunnels with a length of 1489m, 5 interchanges, 10 separated interchanges, 18 overpasses, 38 passages, and 1 service area.
This project adopts the BT+EPC general contracting mode for construction. During the construction process of the Dengfeng to Ruzhou section of Jiaotong Expressway, five participating companies each set up a construction branch. In the fourth and fifth branches, two reinforced concrete culverts were selected and changed to steel corrugated pipe culverts with similar water crossing sections.
How to choose material of galvanized steel corrugated pipe culverts? According to the existing technical specifications, the material of the corrugated pipe culvert is subjected to routine witness sampling testing based on the inspection items and standards of the current specifications. The main technical parameters of the corrugated pipe culvert used in this project are as follows: the diameter of the steel corrugated pipe is 4m, the wall thickness is 5.5mm, the waveform is V-shaped, the wave height is 68mm, the wave distance is 150mm, the valley radius is 32mm, and the peak radius is 32mm. The material used is Q235-A hot plate, and the surface is treated with hot-dip galvanizing for corrosion prevention. The galvanizing amount is 600g/m2, and the average thickness should exceed 84. The connection method of the corrugated plate is mainly overlap, high-strength bolts are tightened, and sealed with sealant.
Main structure of corrugated pipe.In general, this type of pipe culvert includes three basic forms: pipe culvert, arch culvert, and pipe arch culvert. In terms of connection methods, it is mainly riveted, bolted, and sleeved. In engineering applications, it is mainly in the form of pipe culvert. When the diameter exceeds 150cm, multiple pieces can be spliced and connected by bolted connection. This project adopts a steel corrugated pipe culvert with a diameter of 400cm.
The pipe culvert pieces with good durability are processed and manufactured by the factory. Before leaving the factory, the accessories are hot-dip galvanized, and each link is strictly controlled. They are transported to the site and coated with asphalt on the construction site to enhance the external anti-corrosion properties and extend the service life. Asphalt can also be applied to the pipe wall according to actual needs to strengthen maintenance. Compared with traditional culverts, it has strong durability.
This type of corrugated pipe culvert has strong resistance to deformation. It belongs to a flexible structure with the characteristic of lateral compensation displacement. It has significant advantages in tensile strength and resistance to deformation. In engineering, it can effectively prevent the damage of upper components and reduce bridge abutment jumping, making driving safer and more comfortable. At the same time, it also solves the problem of the mismatch between culvert settlement and roadbed settlement.
During the construction process, the civil engineering and profile installation can be separated and installed separately, and then assembled together. Compared with reinforced concrete culverts, corrugated pipe culverts have a much shorter construction period, which can be completed in two to three weeks. Simply considering the construction of the culvert body, six skilled technicians can install a pipe culvert with a length of 60m and a diameter of 4m in just two to three days. For masonry structures of the same scale, the installation time is at least one and a half to two months, and the process is complex, requiring a large amount of labor. When constructing key sections, if steel corrugated pipes are used, it can be opened to traffic one to one and a half months in advance.
Environmental protection. The main body of the pipe culvert is made of steel, and some concrete is used at the entrance to effectively reduce, or avoid the use of conventional building materials ,such as gravel river sand, cement, wood, etc. It causes less damage to the surrounding construction environment, making it more eco-friendly.
